$25 Billion to Save 25,000 Children

It’s extraordinary to me that the United States can find $700 billion to save Wall Street and the entire G8 can’t find $25 billion dollars to save 25,000 children who die every day from preventable diseases.

– Bono

Thanks to enewsletter from Sojourners for the quote.

One would hope that this bailout will contribute to some children eating better, or at least not dropping into starvation. It might. But Bono’s point is very important.

  • When we use our taxes to help the rich, (The rich are supposed to know how to use money, and they are supposed to have money, and by trickle down theory which has brought us nothing but deficit after deficit, you think people would realize, that as it says in that song (Good King Wenceslas) “Ye who now will bless the poor, shall your selves find blessing” This is also good economics. “The healthy need not of a physician but the sick” I say “The wealthy need not of a bailout but the poor.
You remember the money we received from Bush? Well, that was not from him, that was from (Us) the government of the people for the people by the people, and we took money away from ourselves, that could have gone to programs that created jobs and that the burden away from future taxes and would help the economy because the government (We the middle and lower class) would be giving money back to itself with a returned investment.
Trickle down economics doesn’t work. Regan had huge trillion dollar deficits, and Bush Sr. tripled it. Clinton sent us toward a more FDR new deal policy, and we had a good surplus. W. Bush goes back to giving the rich tax breaks, and we start to bottom out on our economy. We need to invest the money in the government, which is We the People, and not in the rich. This is not just a Christian choice, it’s a true democratic and republic choice, and it is economically sound. When our government creates jobs: Road projects, bridge projects, education, the FDA, the people who inspect toys to make sure they don’t have led based paint. The doctors, who help those who cannot afford regular health care, we are creating more jobs, a greater tax base, better services, and a better economy, spread wealth, and fixed payments for services that we won’t have to pay up the wazoo for privately.

Now some say this is bigger government, and these people are most likely the ones who don’t want business told what to do, but want to tell you who you can marry, what you can do with your body, what you can protest, and what your morality should be. I would like people to take time, and read their history, because it will prove what I am saying to b right, not because I have ordained it, or said it, but because it has been proven since the beginning of time. I say help the people, which in our country is the government, and we help ourselves.

Here is an interesting article I found that helps me to give an example. This article was copied from Michael Moore.com:

Day in the Life of Joe Middle-Class Republican

    By John Gray

Joe gets up at 6:00am to prepare his morning coffee. He fills his pot full of good clean drinking water because some liberal fought for minimum water quality standards. He takes his daily medication with his first swallow of coffee. His medications are safe to take because some liberal fought to insure their safety and work as advertised.

All but $10.00 of his medications are paid for by his employers medical plan because some liberal union workers fought their employers for paid medical insurance, now Joe gets it too. He prepares his morning breakfast, bacon and eggs this day. Joe’s bacon is safe to eat because some liberal fought for laws to regulate the meat packing industry.

Joe takes his morning shower reaching for his shampoo; His bottle is properly labeled with every ingredient and the amount of its contents because some liberal fought for his right to know what he was putting on his body and how much it contained. Joe dresses, walks outside and takes a deep breath. The air he breathes is clean because some tree hugging liberal fought for laws to stop industries from polluting our air. He walks to the subway station for his government subsidized ride to work; it saves him considerable money in parking and transportation fees. You see, some liberal fought for affordable public transportation, which gives everyone the opportunity to be a contributor.

Joe begins his work day; he has a good job with excellent pay, medicals benefits, retirement, paid holidays and vacation because some liberal union members fought and died for these working standards. Joe’s employer pays these standards because Joe’s employer doesn’t want his employees to call the union. If Joe is hurt on the job or becomes unemployed he’ll get a worker compensation or unemployment check because some liberal didn’t think he should lose his home because of his temporary misfortune.

Its noon time, Joe needs to make a Bank Deposit so he can pay some bills. Joe’s deposit is federally insured by the FSLIC because some liberal wanted to protect Joe’s money from unscrupulous bankers who ruined the banking system before the depression.

Joe has to pay his Fannie Mae underwritten Mortgage and his below market federal student loan because some stupid liberal decided that Joe and the government would be better off if he was educated and earned more money over his life-time.

Joe is home from work, he plans to visit his father this evening at his farm home in the country. He gets in his car for the drive to dads; his car is among the safest in the world because some liberal fought for car safety standards. He arrives at his boyhood home. He was the third generation to live in the house financed by Farmers Home Administration because bankers didn’t want to make rural loans. The house didn’t have electric until some big government liberal stuck his nose where it didn’t belong and demanded rural electrification. (Those rural Republican’s would still be sitting in the dark)

He is happy to see his dad who is now retired. His dad lives on Social Security and his union pension because some liberal made sure he could take care of himself so Joe wouldn’t have to. After his visit with dad he gets back in his car for the ride home.

He turns on a radio talk show, the host’s keeps saying that liberals are bad and conservatives are good. (He doesn’t tell Joe that his beloved Republicans have fought against every protection and benefit Joe enjoys throughout his day) Joe agrees, “We don’t need those big government liberals ruining our lives; after all, I’m a self made man who believes everyone should take care of themselves, just like I have”.

The bailout will help people like McCain, to keep their seventh house (Maybe they will pay all of their taxes on all their houses, unlike McCain who hasn’t paid for taxes on one of his homes in the last for years: Look it up @www.huffingtonpost.com) It will not help we the people, it will hurt the government bank, which is the people of the USA. We are the government. Maybe that is the real reason why some people want less government, so they can have more power?

  • It seems this bailout is just about calming the waters so we can get back to consuming with a peace of mind. Spend! That is our patriotic duty, right? Isn’t that what our president said following 9/11. We are so sick as a nation. We have more than enough to address the worldwide needs of all the children. But we are so busy keeping up with the jones’ that we don’t have time to think about the poor. . .

  • To be fair, if Wall Street did not get that bailout the USA would have a MAJOR depression. None of us would be able to purchase a home, start a business, ect, because no one would ever be able to use credit again.
Our money would be worthless, and we couldn’t help ANY children at that point, including our own.
