Koran 9:11 Offers Some Hope to ‘The Eagle’

I received an email yesterday pointing out how much of Old Testament history happened in or referred to the area that is today’s Iraq. That part of the email was fairly accurate. Then it added this alleged quotation from the Koran, the holy book of Islam.

Quran (9:11) “For it is written that a son of Arabia would awaken a fearsome Eagle. The wrath of the Eagle would be felt throughout the lands of Allah and lo, while some of the people trembled in despair still more rejoiced; for the wrath of the Eagle cleansed the lands of Allah; and there was peace.”

So I dug out the copy of the Koran I got off ebay a year ago and looked up 9:11. We’ve been mislead.
Koran 9:11 actually says,
if they repent,
establish regular prayers,
and practice regular charity,
they are your brethren in Faith …

So I think:

  1. Wow. There may even be hope for US leaders?
  2. Who makes up this stuff (the false quote above)? Who keeps circulating it? It’s REALLY offensive! Do you see why? (If this were one of my classes, I’d press that question a bit. Why do I take offense at this? What is it that would be so offensive in this quote to many people – and not just to Muslims? Point something out to me.)

Urban Legends says this about the ‘quote’:

No, this isn’t a legitimate quotation from the Quran (or Koran), the sacred text of Islam. The chapter and verse citation quoted above is a leg-pull, an obvious play on the USA’s (the Eagle) launching of military action against Afghanistan and Iraq (the “lands of Allah”) in response to the September 11 terrorist attacks on America organized by Osama bin Laden (the “son of Arabia awakening a fearsome eagle”). That the chapter and verse selection match the date of the terrorist attacks (9:11) is another giveaway to the joke.

Depending upon which translation of the Quran one uses, the section corresponding to chapter 9, verse 11 actually reads something like this:

But if they repent and keep up prayer and pay the poor-rate, they are your brethren in faith; and We make the communications clear for a people who know.

(“The poor rate” is a tax, not on income but on holdings. It was a welfare provision, and by taxing holdings it would (at least in theory) affect people year after year even if they managed to hide their income.)

  • Hi Ben,

I turn the other cheek to your comments, like a good Christian. This attitude i learned in muslim house hold, where I was taught that Colour, Race and Faith are to be respected. Cut your finger and you will bleed “RED” regardless of what you believeand the colour your skin may be.
You see, the bad islamist nor the bad christian is going the inherit the earth; Only the meek. The true belivers are those that see through the bulldust and get on with being a human. For your information the translation of the word “ISLAM” into english is ” one who submits to gods will. I guess that makes you a muslim?

    Cheers, live long and prosper

  • You go, Donald! I see in the Bible time and time again the way God uses attacks, etc. to punish the people for something. He also sends the rains, the winds, and the whirlwinds (i.e. Katrina in New Orleans, earthquakes in India & elsewhere, tornadoes in the midwest) to get our attention. How long can he hide his eyes? Apparently a long time. Then he acts. He is a loving God who seeks our good, not our harm.

  • Ben Frisk says, “Don’t act like it’s a huge deal … to have their book twisted.” What hypocrisy. Let’s become just like our enemies. Isn’t that the problem, that muslim extremists don’t have forgiveness in their spiritual vocabulary? Christians do, but people like Ben don’t want to practice it.

“But I say to you, Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, so that you may be children of your Father in heaven; for he makes his sun rise on the evil and on the good, and sends rain on the righteous and on the unrighteous. For if you love those who love you, what reward do you have? Do not even the tax collectors do the same?” –Matthew 5:43-45

When was the last time each of us prayed for our terrorist enemies?

Realize this: God himself has allowed for these people to attack us. During times of the OT before Christ, God allowed this type of attack to get his people to wake up, to repent, and to rely on him. Consider that this may be a call for us as a nation to repent. How blessed we were when Christian values and behavior permeated our nation, but now that it seems our standards and morals decline and our greed and hypocrisy rises, our friction in the world also rises.

  • Ben – So are you upset that we are considered “good guys” and the Muslims are considered “bad guys” and the hypocrisy of that statement? Or do you honestly believe all Muslims are “bad guys”? I’ve read your post five times and still can’t understand what you mean here.

  • Don’t act like its a huge deal for the muslims to have their book twisted. They do it to the Bible all the time. What you should find disgusting is that we are the good guys and they are the killers. End of story. And for us to be circulating false information just makes us look bad even though we are the good ones. THAT is why this is a bad email not because some muslim might take offense. You people need to learn that political correctness is not one of the ten commandments and I will not buy into it. POLITICALLY INCORRECT AND PROUD OF IT!

–Ben (By the way, I am full blooded Korean.)
