Lying Leaders and Jesus

September 22, 2004

Certain key leaders bribe, lie, manipulate and destroy while others just go on doing good. Sounds like today, but we also find that pattern at the end of the Gospel according to Matthew(Mt 28:12-20).

Here’s what the leaders did and said:

They gave the soldiers a large sum of money, telling them, “You are to say [lies]…” So the soldiers took the money and did as they were instructed. And this story has been widely circulated … to this very day.

As today, the intent of the leaders / bribers was to silence those who were speaking the truth and defending the interests of the people. And as today, those deliberate lies gain credence among significant portions of the population, especially among the actively religious elements (“widely circulated among the Jews to this very day”). But Jesus encouraged his followers to go on with their good work of truth-telling and life-changing, and they did.

Then Jesus … said … “go and make disciples of all peoples … teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you.”

The life-changing, culture-changing, truth-telling, love-promoting, justice-enhancing work begun by those disciples continues to this day, while those lying leaders lost their positions and power within a few short years.

May it be so for us!
