“False Concepts” of the Christian Right Make Witnessing Difficult

[Here is the wrap-up of an email I received the other day – from someone I do not know. It’s reproduced here with permission from the author.]

I’m deeply disturbed at what is happening to the Christian right. Their agenda isn’t Christ’s.

In talking with non-believers about Christianity, I spend 90 % of the time trying to undo the false concepts of Christianity that the right is espousing. It’s incredibly hard to do this without speaking against my fellow Christians who are misguided on many issues, but who mean well.

How do I share my own Christian experience, how do I share the gospel with non-believers without getting put in the position of putting down the beliefs of my own Christian brothers and sisters in Christ who are giving the American public a false view of the gospel of Christ?

I am someone in a position to say that many, many people bitterly resent Christians because of many conservative beliefs that aren’t coming from the New Testament. Many people are completely bitter and turned off to wanting to hear about our faith. Consequently, many people will be lost forever and I grieve about that.

It used to be that Christians were known for their charitable work with the poor, etc. Now, we’re known mainly for our wish to rid America of liberalism and free will, as well as our unrelenting bigoted social war against homosexuals.

I appreciate your website. I haven’t read all the way through it, but I will. It’s good to know that I’m not alone with my beliefs. I know there are other Christian Democrats who are disturbed also about what’s happening to Christian conservatives. Thanks for listening. Yours in Christ, Laura

  • Dear Drew,

Christ says Remove the mote out of your own EYE. You are a sinner, and I don’t see you or the unreligious right pushing for laws against lying, or how about those very distasteful girls gone wild. Christ says if you have even thought of committing adultery, you have. The republicans are like the Pharisees, to busy telling people how to live, and not dealing with their own sins. (And republicans sin very well) they are the money changers, and they are those who spoil the poor, and take the widows mite.

You should be smart enough to see what the real message is, hate for power/Divide and conquer . Secondly, if you are proud to be an American, you should value the rights of others, even those whom you do not agree with. I think Viagra appearing on television is wrong, but I leave judgment up to God, and I grant others their liberty. God will judge. Don’t forget that sex is a sin. I guess you will be abstinent . Jesus Jesus did not rebuke the harlots, he did not rebuke the thief . He rebuked the hypocritical Pharisees, who are the republicans of our day. I have read the bible cover to cover 4 times, I am not asking you to take my word though, read the bible, and than you will understand why Christ said “I will have mercy and not sacrifice..” In the end, what if God had made you a homosexual. can you even imagine the damage people who turn off gay people from, finding God, do? This isn’t the story of the 100th sheep, it is the story of those who Rob God!

  • The Right is always right. And the Left will be rightfully left behind, I guess ;-(

A thing so vile and tricky as reality is not needed in this sterile cosmos of thinking.

  • How does hatred of sin make me a biggot? I do not approve the the homosexual life style. And I will vote that way beacuse I feel that I will be held accountable the way I vote. We did not start this war. They did. Laws were already in place to prevent these sinful acts. The left started to bombard us with law suits, rallys and the media. The right may not be the best choice, but certainly is better.

  • I am so excited that there are other Christians who are waking up to the disturbing going ons coming from the right. I am so heartbroken that the right is the so called standard of what non believers think christianity is all about.
