Red States Are More Pro-Abortion

The numbers show that liberal influence is more effective in reducing abortions than is conservative influence. [This is info lifted from the Liberals Like Christ site. You can see Ray Dubuque's original chart there, about 1/2 way down the page.]

These numbers are important. They show actual results. They show which party’s impact over time is most effectively anti-abortion – and it’s not the so-called conservatives! Liberal policies, behaviors and attitudes apparently REDUCE abortions. Republican policies, attitudes and behaviors apparently INCREASE abortions. The results are similar regarding teen pregnancy.

THEREFORE: You WILL do more to reduce abortions by voting for pro-choice candidates than by voting for anti-abortion candidates. Weird huh? But it’s true! Your vote matters. Unborn babies’ lives are at stake.

Here’s how Rev. Dubuque states the obvious conclusion from his charts:

If indeed, as everybody says, “actions speak louder than words”, then it is conservatives and Republicans – NOT liberals and Democrats – who are “pro-abort”.

RED-STATE / BLUE-STATE ABORTION RATES COMPARED:

All but one of the ten states with the LOWEST rates of abortion are considered “LIBERAL” :

Liberal 1 Massachusetts 2.4
Liberal 2 Connecticut 2.8
Liberal 3 New Jersey 3.0
Liberal 4 Rhode Island 3.2
Liberal 5 New York 3.3
Liberal 6 Pennsylvania 3.3
Liberal 7 Wisconsin 3.4
Conservative 8 North Dakota 3.4
Liberal 9 Maryland 3.5
Liberal 10 Minnesota 3.6

All but one of the Sixteen states with the HIGHEST rates of abortion are considered “CONSERVATIVE” :

Conservative 35 Texas 5.4
Conservative 36 Alaska 5.5
Liberal 37 Washington 5.6
Conservative 38 Mississippi 5.7
Conservative 39 Kentucky 5.8
Conservative 40 Arizona 5.8
Conservative 41 Florida 5.9
Conservative 42 New Mexico 6.0
Conservative 43 Idaho 6.2
Conservative 44 Alabama 6.2
Conservative 45 Indiana 6.6
Conservative 46 Wyoming 6.5
Conservative 47 Tennessee 6.6
Conservative 48 Oklahoma 6.7
Conservative 49 Arkansas 7.1
Conservative 50 Nevada 9.0

IN TERMS OF LOCAL POLITICS – SCOTT KLEEB’S RUN FOR THE SENATE:

A friend at church wondered recently how I could be supporting Scott Kleeb for US Senate (and previously for Congr
ess). “Adrian (the Congressional candidate and former state Senator) is a fine Christian young man.” Connie and I answered that he may or may not be that, but Adrian Smith’s record is that he does virtually nothing.

Kleeb, with his genuine Catholic background, his profound integrity, his intelligence and incredible work ethic is the kind of person we need in office. There is no question that having Democrat Scott Kleeb in national office will do more to reduce abortions than “fine Christian” Republican Adrian Smith ever will.

Scott’s current opponent is also one of those Republican anti-abortion candidates. If we are concerned to reduce abortions it may be time to start voting for some Democrats.

[Dubuque also has numbers about teen pregnancy on that same page. He also has a good article on that page from Fuller Seminary Professor Glen Stassen.]

The statistics you’re quoting are fantasy. As of 2005, per the CDC, the states with the HIGHEST rates of abortion are: Connecticut, Delaware, Mass., Nevada, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, Rhode Island, Virginia and Washington. Read ‘em and weep…table 3: http://www.cdc.gov/mmwr/preview/mmwrhtml/ss5713a1.htm?s_cid=ss5713a1_e

The abortion rates presented here are dubious, at best.

Where are you getting your information from?

Even granting that this dubious study is correct, should christians take the pragmatic approach reccomended here, and vote to reduce abortions, even at the price of perpetuating the practice? I cannot see how anything but abolition is consistant with the sanctity of life.

The “facts” presented in this article are very sketchy and prove nothing but the need for better research, as previous comments have suggested. For a list of pro-life action President Bush has taken, visit the link below. The link goes on to tell us what a pro-choice president would do to spread abortion. Please visit this link. Let’s be logical: if someone thinks there is no reason to protect the life of the unborn in law, do you really believe he is the one more capable of saving their lives?

I might add…sometimes it isn’t the citizens of the state that are receiving the abortions. Take KS for example, a very red state, they have a clinic in Wichita that accepts late term abortions. Because of this, women from across the united states travel to KS to receive treatment.

Nobody is saying that being Republican raises abortion rates; merely that being Republican/Conservative/Christian does not lower them.

Some red states also have a high povery and some have a very large minority population. That would be worth adding to this research.
Ex. MS, LA, and TX are just a few.

There are only 26 states listed. Is this an error or is the article trying to persuade with only selective evidence?

This is interesting. That the low abortion rate states are mostly liberal and the high rate ones are conservative is intriguing, but I don’t think it necessarily indicates causality. For example, Alaska is listed as a high abortion rate state, but I would think that it might be more due to the relatively young population, rather than to policies one way or another. It seems like it would be worth further research, though.
